Books aren't just about words, their object-hood is
something every passionate reader has experienced, relished and longed for.
There is something very reassuring about the tactility of a book, the smell of
the paper, and the fact that you can always flip backward and forward to your
favourite parts. As children all of us have ‘personalised’ our books by
doodling all over them and making our own special notes. This workshop will
look at this transformational process through an artistic lens and engage the
participants in the creative exercise of making an artist’s book.
The workshop will be a fun exercise in exploring
materials - photocopied and digital images, threads, tea bags, natural and
found objects, multilingual text, paints, pastels and pens – and a conceptual
enquiry into the implications of a book being transformed into an intimate art
object.
About the Artist: Indian-Australian artist Natasha Narain
will guide the participants through the process of layering, drawing, and
juxtaposing materials and meanings. Natasha’s own artist books are intimate and
portable artworks to hold and to engage with. These books act as microcosms
that connect with her large, deeply patterned paintings, and her use of
photography as a medium to construct new motifs and narratives. And in turn,
her larger works are collaged back into her books and paintings, creating a
body of works that dialogue with each other constantly. Natasha has worked with
community groups to discuss personal and collective memory, the diasporic
experience, exploring strategies for coping with fast paced changes with a view
to building resilience and artistic communities.
Natasha will be sharing her own work to introduce her
love of books, and her fascination with artist books in particular as a
contemporary and accessible medium.
